Visual Studio 2012 with .NET 4.5 doesn't have a State Machine Workflow RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using Visual Studio Ultimate 2012 with .NET 4.5 and when I try to create a Windows Workflow Foundation project there is no State Machine Workflow template!

I only see the following options:

    • Activity Designer Library
    • Activity Library
    • WCF Workflow Service Application
    • Workflow Console Application

and that is it, nothing else.

  • DEGT,

State Machine is a type of activity within Workflow Foundation.  Choose the type of workflow project you want. After creating the project a blank activity (aka workflow) is created for you. Open the blank activity and you will see the 'Control Flow' Category in the toolbox on the left. Within this category are the state machine related activities for you to use.

The project types are for different uses...

Activity Designer Library: For creating designers for custom built activities.

Activity Library: For creating custom activities which can be reused by adding a reference in other projects.

WCF Workflow Service Application: For creating a workflow that can be executed through WCF and hosted I believe in IIS.

Workflow Console Application: For creating a workflow which will be executed from a console application.
