  • Principal is a primary server where resides the database which participates in mirroring.Primary  server that sends the modified records the mirroring server (where resides the copy of the principal database)

As such it matter of failover which is primary and which is mirror .One major difference is primary database is one which is online and is talking to application while mirror server is one which is always in restoring state and trying to sync with Principal as close as possible,

  • Principal server is the primary server. And mirror server is secondary one.

Principal server sends the updated data to mirror server. And the mirror server data is updated.

Principal server's data can be viewed any time. Mirrored database is not accessible.
