User Profile Sync with AD and SQL Server 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hiyee, have a few doubts to clear. We intend to synchronize our User Profile with AD & a SQL table that contain users information.

    1) When we update our details in User Profile, will it affect both SQL Server table & AD? Or we require to do synchronization to export the data? E.g. EmpID change (contain in both AD & SQL server)

    2) If our AD have a field "Description" and SQL table with a field "Skills". Can we like use the "Skills" data from SQL table and replace the "Description" in User Profile? Will it be update "Skills" data to "Decription" in  AD ?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Is the "SQL table" you said the “UserInfo” table in the Content database?

When you update the details in user profile service, it will sync to user information list in the SharePont site, there is a timer job User Profile to SharePoint Full Synchronization.

For sync to AD: all profile properties are Import by default, if you want to write back changes to AD  you must remove the existing property mapping and recreate it using Export as the direction. Then those properties will be written back to AD during a Sync:http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx

There is a property "Skills" in user profile properies, you can create a mapping for this property and map it to the description attribute in Ad using Export as the direction .
