Using Windows Azure Connect to connect an Azure web role with an on-premise Linux box running Oracle

    Question

  • I have a scenario at work where we are looking at Azure, but have a need to hook up a web role to an on-premise Oracle DB that runs on Linux - I don't see anything in Azure Connect that would suggest that is supported at this point.  Am I wrong - does Azure Connect support Linux as an on-premise OS?  If not are there any announced plans to extend the Virtual Network capability to non-Windows boxes?

  • You are correct - Windows Azure Connect does not currently support connectivity to non-Windows computers.

In future we will add the ability to connect to Azure using an on-premises VPN device - this will enable connecting to down-level and non-Windows resources that the Connect agent does not support.   At this point we don't have anything we can share regarding specific timeframes.

  • You should look at Clemens Vasters post on PortBridge which uses the Azure AppFabric Service Bus to connect to an on-premise box.
