CAL requirements for running 2003R2 Enterprise on 2012 Standard hyper-v using downgrade rights for the 2003 guest RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have a client who must buy 2 new servers to install and run Windows server 2003 R2 enterprise to add to their small terminal server farm.

The Current Dell hardware we are looking at does not have support for 2003 Raid drivers so we are looking to run the 2003 servers as Hyper V virtual guests on 2012 Standard. They plan on buying 2 x dell servers and 2 x windows 2012 standard licences

2012 standard gives us 2 virtual machines per host server and the plan is to install both 2012 standard licences on both new servers as server core with only hyper v enabled and use the 2012 downgrade rights to install 1 x 2003 r2 enterprise on each server.

The question is what user cals do they need if they go this route. Do they need 2012 CALs even though no user will actually be accessing 2012? They will only be accessing the virtual 2003's so will their current 2008 Cals suffice.

    Many thanks.
