Active Directory Migration RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hello Team

    We have five servers running on Windows Server 2008 operating system now.

    Microsoft is discontinuing the support of Windows Server 2008 from March 31, 2017. So on we are upgrading the servers to Windows Server 2016 Standard and Data Center Editions.

    Can you please assist us in providing the process of migrating Active Directory as it is from Windows Server 2008 to new server running on Windows Server 2016.

    Let me know for any more details. Thanks

  • 1. Install 2016 on the new server (or decom 1 old 2008 and install 2016 on it) and add this dc as additional dc in your domain;

    2. Move all FSMO roles to the new 2016 DC; verify if this is GC; verify replication; verify DNS;

    3. Repeat decom/install 2016/add as addional DC for every 2008;

    4. Raise forest/raise domain functional level to the highest level only when you dont' have any 2008s

    That's all.
