Word 2003 Crashing on Doc Close - Windows 7 x64 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I code below crashes Word2003 when running on Windows 7 x64.  I do much more complex stuff and it works but when I do this simple test it fails.  I think the Word install is good.  It works on Windows 7 32bit and Windows XP.  Can someone verify this?  Am I doing something wrong.

    Sub CloseTest()
      Dim tmpDoc As Word.Document
        Set tmpDoc = Documents.Add
        tmpDoc.Close SaveChanges:=wdDoNotSaveChanges   'Fail here
        Set tmpDoc = Nothing
    End Sub

  • I think this issue is related to (surprisingly) Bluetooth! This forum gave me the answer:

    The best answer from that forum being to use this software:

    To disable all bluetooth components (just right click on each bluetooth item listed in the menu and choose disable from the first submenu).

  • I would really appreciate it if someone could test the VBA sub with either Word2003 or Word2007 on Windows 7 64bit.  I need to validate the problem.  If you have any ideas on how to fix it that is appreciated also.

  • I've tried the code on Win 7 64 bit in Word 2007 and 2010 and it runs fine. I have all the latest service packs installed.

  • Thanks.  I thought it had to be a problem with this computer.  Almost every new PC is shipped with Windows 7 x64 and .Close has got to be used a lot.  A lot of others should have this problem.  I need to try it on another computer.  I uninstalled all Office versions including Office Starter that came with the PC and reinstalled Office 2007.  I ran CCleaner to get rid of temp files and clean registry.  I deleted Word temp files.  I ran Word as Administrator.  It only fails when doing Close in VBA.  Closing from the menu works.  I ran a lot of complex VBA code and everything works so it is not a bad install.  Nothing seems to fix it.  Any ideas on what to try?

    I think I will get Office 2010 and try that.

  • IT WORKED!!! Thanks.  I am currently using Office 2007 which was failing.  I tried OfficeIns and disabled it but when I started Word it still showed up as an Addin.  I edited the registry and it still showed.  I used Manage Addins and removed it and it worked properly.  Again, thanks.  I would have never guessed this.  I'll try Word 2003 now.

  • After figuring this out I found another posting related to this.  Beware if you use Motorola bluetooth.
