How to run an interactive powershell session? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Hyper-V Core 2016 host.

I ran this (from the article at https://blog.docker.com/2016/09/dockerforws2016/):

    docker run -ti microsoft/windowsservercore powershell

    and get this error:

docker : the input device is not a TTY.  If you are using mintty, try prefixing the command with 'winpty'

    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (the input devic...d with 'winpty':String) [], RemoteException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : NativeCommandError

    Any ideas why?

  • What shell are you running this from? Cygwin? Msys2? Or the Powershell ISE? The first two will need winpty. The ISE doesn't support a (pseudo) TTY, so you would need to run from a "regular" PowerShell prompt if so.
