User profile import in SharePoint 2010

Question
-
Hi there.I installed sharepoint 2010 beta on ws 2008 server. Everything installed complete and running fine. But the problem is I want to give access to our team to play with it. When I try to add a connection to import users from AD on the page synchronization connection, When I hit the button populate containers, nothing is happening. I given right details to add connection, but no message, nothing. I don't know what is happening. Finally failed to create a new connection. Now, at least I want to give access to 5 users in my team and thought to create them manually by going to people user profiles option. There I have an option to create a new user and when I searched for some user in the people picker control, always it is saying no search results found. So, People picker is not able to find any user in the active directory. What is the problem. I configured everything correct and working fine. But adding users is matters, not at all working. Can you guys please help me out on this where am I going wrong?thanks

The profile synchronization issue is a known bug, is discussed below, and is fixed in later builds. This information is also discussed in great detail on MS Connect, which is where the newsgroups are for the few of us who actually have the Tech Beta bits. You probably were given a link to that and have access. That is the area where we reports bugs, questions, and recommendations to the products teams.
However, the people picker part DOES work in my build. I'm able to manually add user profiles, and each of my users in AD will resolve in the people picker. I then manually add all their profile info, such as Manager, email, phone#, etc. Once I do that and run my indexing, everything shows up and works as it should in the MySites.

I read your reply in another post Clayton. Thanks for the quick reply. But, in both posts you mentioned you were able to add profiles manually, For me, I can't....I am really frustrated and failed. When I enter any character in people picker and hit enter, no search results are displaying. What could be the issue? Please help me out.....-Praveen.

Can't tell on the surface. Can you list out all of your details? Is it a single server build that contains AD, SQL, etc? Is it a Complete installation or Basic? W2K8 or W2K8R2?
You don't put characters in the people picker itself, but rather in the popup box that shows up when you click the address book icon. Is that what you meant? The two ways to use the People Picker are with the address book or by typing in a value that resolves properly like the username, and then hit the check icon. The people picker should recognize your AD users as long as your SP installation is on that domain.

It is a single server and which is on domain. Active directory, SQL server 2008 and installed stand-alone on Windows server 2008 R2.I tried in all ways to test people picker functionality, but failed in all cases......-Praveen.

Mine is buggy, which is known in Tech Preview, but it always resolves names. Not sure what to tell you without looking at your system.

Yeah, i will be doing that, too, because the Tech Preview build is very buggy across the board. Do you have access to MS Connect? It should be included with your access to the bits that you currently have. That is the best place to ask questions, since the product teams review the questions and have answers for these types of questions. It's also where you can submit bugs if there is no answer.

Hi Clayton,OK, I have access to MS Connect and checked the bugs. And I found only one which related to this."People picker possible bug in SQL when searching ContentDB"Is that bug you are mentioning about?-Praveen.

No, I wasn't referring to a specific bug submission - I haven't perused them. I am talking about the newsgroups themselves where I have asked lots of questions. I asked questions about People Pickers mainly in the InfoPath newsgroups, but there should be some in the General area of SharePoint, too.

Is there any update on this thread??
I just spotted this blog. Am also is having a problem creating a connection. When I cliked on the "Create New Connection" it throws the following error.
"Cannot navigate to the reqiested page while User Profile Synchronization is runnin. Please wait for the current Synchronization run to finish."
I waited and waited and tried by stopping all the timer jobs for the user profiles job with no luck.
Thanks ...Friday, November 13, 2009 9:18 PM -
It doesn't work yet - wait until Beta 2 releases. Nothing has changed, because the new version hasn't been released yet.

Yes, I was told during Tech Preview that this was resolved "in a later build." I had hoped that would mean that the Beta 2 release would have this resolved. I had a video conference with an MVP colleague yesterday who said that her Beta build was still having problems with the synchronization piece, but she was able to work around it by using a domain admin account and moving SP2010 onto her SQL box. She is not yet sure what fixed it, but I personally will be rebuilding my SP2010 server today (going from Tech Preview to Beta), and I will let you know how it goes and what I figure out.

That's just a nickname. The build # is what you go by.
Praveen, I have gotten my system rebuilt and am at the Synchronization Connection page. I have successfully populated my container with the information from my Active Directory, but my problem is that when I click "Ok," nothing happens. It doesn't give an error, sits there for a few seconds, then returns to the Synchronizations Connections page, but there is no connection listed. I'm baffled as to why.
SharePoint Architect || My BlogWednesday, November 25, 2009 2:59 AM -
Well, what do you know...though I had created the User Profile Service Application, it did not start the User Profile Synchronization Service on this server. I went to System Settings > Manage Services on Server and started this (along with the SharePoint Foundation User Code Service for later). When I went back to create a Profile Sync Connection, I got the same message as sps2010 when clicking "Create New Connection." The message was:
"Cannot navigate to the reqiested page while User Profile Synchronization is running. Please wait for the current Synchronization run to finish."
That led me to the Monitoring > Check Job Status area where I saw the ProfileSynchronizationSetupJob running as a result of starting the service.
- This time job stayed at 0% for a while and wasn't changing, so I looked at some of the other User Profile timer jobs that were running. I then changed my schedule to be monthly instead of by the minute
- After making these changes, i saw that my SetupJob had failed after 5+ minutes
- I then stopped and restarted the User Profile Synchronization Service, and the timer job completed in just 10 seconds this time (not sure why)
- Still, after this, I got the same message as above even though the status page said that the synchronization service was idle
That's where I am now...

Folks - got a bit excited, downloaded beta 2.
Next uninstalled the pre-beta2 installation. but seems uninstall did not remove everything so my Beta 2 installation failing with error: "Failed to initialize ShareP0int Products upgrade" when i run configuration wizard. SO looking for clean uninstallation step by steps if there is any.
Here what i did:
- Uninstalled the old SPS 2010 (pre beta 2) from add/remove programs
- Rebooted the system.
- Checked the SQL Database and it still has all the Databases created by the old installation.
- So removed those manually.
- Also found out uninstallation did not remove all the bits from the machine. so removed them manually
-Then installed the Beta 2
- did run the pre reqs
- Installation went fine
- Now when running Configuration wizard it fails with thae error: "Failed to initialize ShareP0int Products upgrade"
So looks like there are something still left in the registry, and i want to do a clean install.
Any steps by steps to remove sps 2010 would be helpful.

You aren't supposed to do it that way - the instructions for Beta2 say to do a clean OS install like what I mentioned above. You can't install Beta on a machine that had TP installed by just uninstalling and re-installing. You need to wipe the machine.

Hi Clayton,
I am facing the same issue and did the same around 8 days ago. I am able to see all containers populated while adding a connection, but when I try to save a connection, it is not giving any message and redirect back to connection list page where I am seeing nothing. No connection added. Seems the logic for adding a connection is not yet completed or it is missing from the version. And about the synchronization run to finish problem, it is still there even if I stop all related jobs from the timer job page. So, there is some logic lacking in the system which prevents the detection of jobs running status and adding connection. Hope these problems will resolve soon in the next version. Hope they will release it soon before customers get full frustration on it........

Uninstalling is not at all succeeded in the system. I tried couple of times and the problem is as you said, it is not deleting any of it's references like databases, folder, iis web sites etc from the system. So, somewhere all these references still there and when I reran the installation they are getting meshed-up. I tried to fix the problem, but not succeeded. So, formatted my machine and did fresh install. I know this is very big work to install everything, but no other way.

Praveen, I got it to work eventually, but the only way I could get it all to work without a problem is by doing the ENTIRE INSTALL and configuration with the Builtin Administrator. I still have Active Directory installed and working, but I did not use any of my service accounts. I installed the SharePoint bits with the Admin, ran the SP Products and Technologies wizard as Admin, configured everything in Central Admin with the Admin, and made the Admin the service account for everything there is.
When I did it that way, my User Profile Sync setup worked on the first try and did not get stuck. Once everything was started, I was able to add my Sync Connection and do an import, which pulled in my 10 AD users. I am now building forms and workflows using this profile data, so I'm good, but I hate that I could never get it to work with proper service accounts.
I had to strip down all the way to my base OS and rebuild SQL, IIS, plus SP2010. Be sure you use this article while doing yours again:

Attempting a single box complete advanced install. Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP3 (Nov09). I've followed the above linked Team Blog article to the letter, however still getting no connection creation. The account I'm using for the User Profile Service is setup in AD with "Replicating directory changes" however not "Replicating directory changes ALL" (does that matter?). This same account is also a local admin on the box, sa in SQL Server, and added as a farm administrator. However, the log entries below still seem to reflect a permissions issue:

ERiehl, did you read through the whole thread, especially the last 8 replies or so? You really need to just use a single account for everything instead of using service accounts. I tried everything I could think of - even following the MS blog - but never got it to work until I used my builtin admin account for EVERYTHING and service accounts for NOTHING. I still have an AD setup and have all my service accounts, but none are being used. My builtin admin is used for everything - sql account, sharepoint bits install (setup), sharepoint farm admin/db access (config), and all service applications. When trying to use proper service accounts, it didn't matter if my account was the farm admin, domain admin, local admin, enterprise, or anything admin, it would never work.

You could check if you use the right accounts on you're server going to Administrative Toosl --> Services and look for:
- Forefront Identity Manager Service
- Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service
The Log On As account should be the local admin account, if you use the single account for everything. You could change the log on account at CA --> Security --> Configure service accounts.
My machine needed a restart to get the accounts changed.Friday, December 4, 2009 11:58 PM -
Even a local admin account isn't good enough. My service account had every right imaginable, including local admin rights, and it could never start those FIM services. It had to be the built-in admin account, and it was automatic when starting the User Profile Sync Service in the System Settings > Services on Server area. You aren't supposed to set the FIM logon account manually. It is done by SharePoint automatically based on the service account used to start the User Profile Service Application.
SharePoint Architect || My BlogSaturday, December 5, 2009 3:03 AM -
Clayton you're post is right. I used the buit-in admin account to start the services through SharePoint. I used Administrative Tools --> services to check if it was running. In first instance it was disabled. After setting the right built-in admin account and restarted the server the services where automatic starting.
Never change the account through Administrative Tools --> services.Saturday, December 5, 2009 10:56 AM -
Hi Clayton:
We never recommended using the Builtin Administrator. Our guidance has been to add the SharePoint farm admin account to the local Administrators group on the WFE servers. Also, I have setup (public beta bits) and tested UPS to import user information running on a separate server running Active Directory.
1. TechNet UPS content has been updated with information from the SharePoint team blog.
a. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee721049(office.14).aspx
2. Profile sync check list for SharePoint Server 2010 beta:
a. No firewall policy blocking communication if you have AD on a separate server
b. WFE farm account is a domain account with local administrator permissions on WFE servers
c. DirSync permissions set for WFE farm account
i. http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2009/12/14/how-to-set-replication-directory-changes.aspx
d. Complete installation
e. WCF hotfix applied
f. WFE farm account has full control permissions on UPS application.
g. Both FIM services are started
3. You can also check the sharepoint log files for user profile errors to see what is blocking the connection setup.

Dave, oh I know that wasn't thre commendation, but I could never get the workarounds to work for me. I did what's in that blog and did it over and over again with all of the suggestions, but it simply would never work. My Farm account was never able to start the FIM services. The moment I rebuilt my farm with Builtin Admin, everything worked on the first try. I needed this to work in order to do all my other testing/building, so I couldn't keep messing with it. I would much prefer to use proper service accounts with least privileges, but I could never figure out why my Farm Admin account with every possible permissions imaginable was not able to start the FIM services. Maybe there is new info about replication directory changes? Also, my setup is on one server, so it wasn't even an issue with intra-server permissions.
SharePoint Architect || My BlogFriday, December 18, 2009 5:44 PM -
I ran into this problem also, I should have read this forum post...would have saved me some time, but i stumbled across this because my connection is not importing anyone. I figured out to be logged in as the Server farm account and have left the Server farm account as the user for all the services and app pools. Just like Clayton, I got tired of messing with trying to get those things working with a service account. So I've created a connection and clicked start profile synchronization, but after it runs the number of user profiles does not change. In the event log I see a warning saying:
The management agent "MOSS-User-Profile-Service-Application" completed run profile "MOSS_DELTAIMPORT_992e94f5-a3e1-4d48-85cf-2584752a0ffd" with a delta import or delta synchronization step type. The rules configuration has changed since the last full import or full synchronization.
User Action
To ensure the updated rules are applied to all objects, a run with step type of full import and full synchronization should be completed.
How do I run with step type of full import? That sounds like what I'm wanting. Basically there are no user profiles created yet and I would like this import to scan AD and create a profile for every user it finds in the places i specify. Is that how this feature works or am I misunderstanding it?Wednesday, February 10, 2010 10:02 PM -

Hikmer, that's what happens when the profile sync service is not yet working. Your FIM services are likely not running on the server.

So, is the import not working? I also get these errors and profiles are not importing from active directory. I've manually created a profile for a valid user in AD and it doesn't get synced either.

Hello,
I had been experiencing issues with pulling in information from AD to InfoPath, and after stumbling on this thread I think I now know why!
I am currently trying to change the User Profile Synchronization Service to a new managed account that I set up which is the local admin account. But when I go to submit, I get this:
An object of the type Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWindowsServiceCredentialDeploymentJobDefinition named "windows-service-credentials-FIMSynchronizationService" already exists under the parent Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.ProfileSynchronizationService named "FIMSynchronizationService". Rename your object or delete the existing object.Troubleshoot issues with Microsoft SharePoint Foundation.

I am trying to change the account, as I saw on this thread Clayton had to use the local admin account for all services, and the User Profile Synchronization Service is not started within CA, nor can I get it to start.
My only fear, is that on set up, I did this as a stand alone install, will this affect the profile service or do I need to perform a rebuild?
Any help that you can offer me, is greatly appreciated!
Kind Regards,

Thanks....but yeah I'm sure I've installed the correct version (unless im mistaken there is only one sharepoint 2010 beta install file out there) and I am not running a standalone install. I specifically remember not selecting standalone. Ontop of that I have a seperate SQL server.Tuesday, February 16, 2010 2:45 PM

Hi Dayna,
I just forcing everyone here to remember the sentence "do not go ahead if you install the standalone format". So, please go through this and see the documentation.

I followed the instructions on the technet article from A to Z but still this does not work.
Is your working?
Thanks,Tuesday, February 16, 2010 4:03 PM -
On one of my servers, it is working when I followed the steps from the article. But, in my laptop the same workaround gives me problem. It is not even finding the users from the people picker. But the second server, everything works fine.
I am really confused and not able to find what the problem in my laptop. When I tried to create connection, it is successfully loading the active directory under populate domain when I tried to save it, no connections found in the list of connections page. But, the other server, works great. God knows the problem.

Yip I hear you. It's so buggy - MS should have tested this in Alpfa before labeling it Beta
This is one of the cool features that does not work. kinda sucks.
But please keep us posted if you figure this out ...
Thanks.Wednesday, February 17, 2010 5:10 PM -
Hi guys,
I have update the post with the new findings. And they are pretty much interesting and it needs long time to test.
Read the UPDATED section in the post for more details.

Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone has installed the RTM, and if so, what installation steps did you follow (were they the same as within the blog) and do you still have the same issue?
Kind Regards,
DaynaFriday, May 7, 2010 8:03 AM -
I have the same curiosity as Dayna.
Have the pre-reqs changed or it's still the same we used in Beta. If it's changed, is it documented somewhere?

I'm getting the same problem on SP2010 RTM not resolved yet.Wednesday, May 12, 2010 2:26 PM

I had expirience that errors too. I gave Network Service Read and execute access of the 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\14.0\Service directory and this issue was gone...
I am still getting the full configuration warning:
The management agent "MOSS-4a199587-0807-4010-bfc6-a04545ff9ea0" completed run profile "MOSS_DELTAIMPORT_14400756-99e4-495f-8088-5f987fa94c4d" with a delta import or delta synchronization step type. The rules configuration has changed since the last full import or full synchronization. User Action To ensure the updated rules are applied to all objects, a run with step type of full import and full synchronization should be completed.
The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. MichelangeloSaturday, May 15, 2010 10:51 AM -

According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee721049.aspx ,Profile Synchronization does not work on a stand-alone installation for SharePoint Server 2010.Friday, July 2, 2010 12:42 PM

According to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee721049.aspx ,Profile Synchronization does not work on a stand-alone installation for SharePoint Server 2010.
I do not see where it says that. I see it says "Business Data Connectivity service : Only augments profile information imported from AD DS. Stand-alone Business Data Connectivity service imports are not supported. The Business Data Connectivity model must include Finders and Specific Finders methods in SharePoint Server 2010. For more information about Finders and Specific Finders methods, see Designing a Business Data Connectivity Model (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=179316)."But I do not see where it says Profile synchronization does not work on a stand-along install. Can you please clarify where this is?

It's in the first paragraph after the "task requirement" section.
If you search "stand-alone" in the page, first match is about BDC you had found, and you can find my point on second match.

Standalone means you are running everything with SPS 2010 on a single box including SQL. In this case this would be SQL Express. After running the sps 2010 setup, you are asked to run the Configuration Wizard, and it asks you whether this is a Farm setup or Standalone. If you choose Standalone it installs SQL Express. And if you choose Farm it asks you to provide SQL server/Database info.

I want to point out though, whether it's a standalone or FARM, this Profile Synchronization is still broken in RTM. Just last week I built a new SPS2010 FARM. At the beginning Profile Import from AD worked and I got really excited as i see users got imported.
Two days later when I wanted to edit the Profile connection, and went to Edit the existing connection, it's missing. I later on found out that the Forefront services are disabled for what ever reasons. This is the same bug that had in beta.
When it intially worked it looks good. This needs to be fixed from Microsoft perspective ASAP othrwise a big component is missing.

I'd like to point out this thread.Specially this:
"For anyone interested I tracked the problem down to a backup. We run a nightly backup (Backup-SPFarm) of the Farm. If that backup uses an account that does not have permissions to the WSS_database the mysite shuts down, disables itself and will not start back up. I was backing up with the farm account, which has full access to the web application, but was not the App Pool the web app was running under. I've seen the behavior on two separate servers and setups. I'm not really sure how to use backup-spfarm with a full backup at this point. I can separate out the farm config and web apps into separate backups, but this seems more like a design flaw or bug than a working model. Odd behavior."
If you are doing a full backup, that very well could be killing User Profile Sync. I have other backup methods available to me, but the fact that backup-spfarm -full could cause the user profile sync to disable itself and effectively die is weird.

Hi All,
In my SharePoint server farm of SPS 2010, we are facing an issue with user profiles import.
Few users are complaining that their Outlook properties are not getting updated in SharePoint(My Site) like Manager, department and Technology.. etc.
when we checked these user profiles in SharePoint, the profiles are getting displayed under Profiles Missing From Import. These are active profiles, still getting displayed there. What might be the reason to happen like this. Due to this their details are not getting updated in the SharePoint.
Incremental import is scheduled for everyday night 11PM.
Please put down your thoughts.
Regards,
V235.
