TFS 2017 On Premise Task Group References RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are running TFS 2017 On Premise and I want to know if there is an upgrade available that allows you to see references from Task Groups as described in this article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/vsts/build-release/concepts/library/task-groups  If not this way - is there any way with On Premise TFS to know what builds are using a given Task Group?  Thanks.

  • Hi,

    There’s no References tab in Tasks Groups in TFS2017, but available in TFS2018 and VSTS.

    You can build the app to check the build contains task group or not through Build Definition REST API, for example:

    "build": [
                "enabled": true,
                "continueOnError": true,
                "alwaysRun": true,
                "displayName": "Task group: test ",
                "timeoutInMinutes": 0,
                "task": {
                    "id": "155baddf-f93b-43e7-975d-6ba2e3d79d4a",
                    "versionSpec": "1.*",
                    "definitionType": "metaTask"
                "inputs": {}
    The definitionType value is metaTask for task group.
