Visual Studio 2015 solution explorer folders not expanding

    Question

  • After upgrading to VC2015, the solution explorer's folders on C++ projects do no open any longer. You can see the top level but if you click the expansion arrow nothing happens.  It works fine on .NET / WPF type projects. I can open the same solution with VC2013 and it works fine again. Any ideas why this happens with VC2015?

  • Hi PeterNannis,

    Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

    According to your description, to make sure whether it is related to the specific project, please create a new C++ project in visual studio 2015 to test this issue.

    (1) If this issue doesn't occur for the new project, I doubt that it is related to your specific project, please copy the code to this new project.

    (2) If this issue still occur for this new project, I doubt that it is related to your visual studio IDE, please take the following steps troubleshoot this issue:

    a. To make sure whether it is related to the visual C++ tool, please reinstall it to see if it helps: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

    b. If the above doesn't help, to make sure whether it is related to the corrupted template, please try to reset the vs templates to see if it helps:

    1) Open Windows Explorer, and navigate to <Visual Studio Installation Path>\Common7\IDE (by default is C:\Program Files or Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\IDE);
    2) Delete the ItemTemplatesCache, ProjectTemplatesCache folder;
    3) Open Visual Studio Command Prompt under Start menu -> All Programs -> Microsoft Visual Studio -> Visual Studio Tools (run it with administrative privilege);
    4) Run the devenv /InstallVSTemplates switch;
    5) Run the devenv /Setup switch;

    Best Regards,

    Jiayi

  • Ok, so creating a new solution and moving the source files works with 2015. The only problem is that this is a BIG project and will take quite some time to get transferred with all the build parameters etc .. a LOT of unproductive work just to be able to use VS2015 ..
