Visual Studio 2010 and Office 2013 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there any way of creating an Excel 2013 workbook based project in Visual Studio 2010? Or create an Excel 2010 project in Visual Studio 2010 that's usable when Excel 2013 is available?

Each time I currently choose the Excel 2010 option VS complains that I don't have the necessary applications available. I can only assume that this relates to the available of Excel 2013 as opposed to 2010.

  • Hello Patrick,

Please take a look at the Running Solutions in Different Versions of Microsoft Office article. It states the following:

If you developed solutions for Microsoft Office 2010, you can run the same solutions in Microsoft Office 2013. If your customer base uses the 2007 Microsoft Office system, you can use Visual Studio 2012 to develop solutions that work in all three versions of Office. In this scenario, the solution will run without errors in the 2007 Microsoft Office system only if the solution doesn’t use features that are new in later versions of Office. Microsoft Office applications can also run solutions that were created by using a previous version of Visual Studio.

You need to have Visual Studio 2012 or 2013 installed for developing Office 2013 projects. But you can run your existing solutions in Office 2013. So, you can create an Excel 2010 project and the deploy it for Excel 2013.
