Making sense of Item.ConversationId property RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have developed an email ticketing system that relies heavily on Microsoft Exchange.

One thing my website has been doing is clustering emails read in from Microsoft Exchange by their Item.ConversationID.

In other words, I understand that the ExchangeID itself is a useful key to mark a given email as unique -- but I also have been using the functionality of ConversationID to group thread-connected emails for easier visual opening.

However now I'm distressed to find that it appears the Item.ConversationID does not behave the way one would expect, i.e., it does not cluster ONLY like emails from the SAME thread, but actually can be used across different email threads, seemingly related to a common sender but not the same thread.

This means I cannot group by this in the database, so I'm at a loss on how to visually organize various emails from the same thread ONLY.
