Answers

  • you can think express edition as a light weight product which are made to target some specific applications,

they do have some limitations like in some of advance features that visual studio 2008 pro has.

they are free to use ! but visual studio 2008 pro is only for 90 days trial period

You can have some info about visual studio 2008 pro here

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/products/cc149003.aspx

for express editions and there seperate features you can visit

    http://www.microsoft.com/express/interest/default.aspx

and if you want to drill down more you can find various topics here that will give you more idea about Express and pro edtion

  • FYI:

For VS2005 there is a products overview: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa700921.aspx

A change from VS2005 Express is the "elimination of the Visual J# sku". VJ# is only be available to customers if they install VS2005. The Express editions are free for customers to download and will not be provided on media.

To professional edition of VS2008 from VS2005, the only change is the inclusion of the former VSTO functionality into the mainline Professional Edition SKU. This will provide Office development functionality to a broader base of developers.

Apart from the addition of the new Visual Studio Team Edition for Database Professionals, there are no SKU lineup changes to Team System in Visual Studio 2008.

    Thanks
