Two different versions of Windows as Domain Controller RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello There,

Please be informed I am setting up a new domain from scratch.

I set up my first domain controller with a windows 2016, but I have two windows servers 2003 which I have to join them to the new network.

I am wondering if I can have a windows server 2012 R2 as the second domain controller as windows server 2016 does not support windows 2003.

As soon as I retire the servers (2003), I can set up a new windows 2016 as the second domain controller.

    Please advise.

  • Maybe you should add 2012 R2 to the 2003 domain, move fsmo roles, decom 2003s, raise forest & domain functional level, add 2016 DC to 2012 R2 domain.
