video playback files stay opening RRS feed

We are currently running a smooth streaming service which serves online movies to paid users, using IIS 7.0 + windows server 2008 R2 + media service plugin 4.1. In order to recognize each playback session from hundreds and thousands of request urls, symbolic links named after randomly generated GUIDs are used as part of the playback urls, each points to specific remote video files stored in a network storage.

Most of the service work fine, only a small issue exists. Each playback opens several files(ex. ismv, isma), but they seemed stay open even if the playback has ended. That continuously contributes to file opening count of the storage and in the end exceeds the limit. As a result, IO performance degrades and memory loading spikes. We'll have to restart either the IIS or the storage to free those stay-opening files to prevent service from crash.

Removing symbolic links also doesn't help, file opening count continues to grow.

Anyone ever met this issue? or have any ideas of why this happened? Any suggestions are much appreciated.

    Hi there,

Do you use a customized SilverLight player? can you test with http://smf.codeplex.com/releases/view/88970?

you can also capture Fiddler trace to check.

    Hi Jenny,

    Thanks for your reply,

though I don't think the cause would be custom players.

Now we're considering using another alternative scheme to meet our needs, since the combination of Windows and Linux System seems to generates some confusing issues that nobody knows why.
