  • The position of the barcode's text (label) depends on the barcode type. The specs for some types of barcodes allow text only below the barcodes, while others allow for it to be above it.

One way to ensure you always follow the correct specification is to use the LEADTOOLS library's barcode engine, since it has built-in functions to output the text in the correct position. Please note that I work for the company that created this library.

If the barcode type (symbology) allows for top, bottom, or both, the library can automatically handle that. This is explained in the documentation for the LEADTOOLS OneDBarcodeWriteOptions.TextPosition Property here:

As for writing the barcodes using the toolkit, the code below shows how to do it for "Code 3 of 9" barcode type, but other types are just as easy to produce:

    Dim bitmapImage As RasterImage = RasterImage.Create(400, 150, 24, 300, RasterColor.White)
' Write the barcode on the image
Dim engine As BarcodeEngine = New BarcodeEngine()
Dim writeOptions As BarcodeWriteOptions = engine.Writer.GetDefaultOptions(BarcodeSymbology.Code3Of9)
Dim sampleData As String = "123-45678"
' There are many supported types, not just Code 3 of 9
    engine.Writer.WriteBarcode(bitmapImage, New BarcodeData(BarcodeSymbology.Code3Of9, sampleData), writeOptions)
' Save the image to a file
Dim codecs As RasterCodecs = New RasterCodecs()
    codecs.Save(bitmapImage, "C:\Output\barcode_image.png", RasterImageFormat.Png, 24)
