.NET ETW: How to record custom stack traces RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm planning to use ETW for diagnosis of UI hangs and related issues. I know there are buit-in capabilities for hangs/waits, but I am interested in recording my own metadata.

So I already have a capability to detect UI hangs, but now I am stuck with how to go on with ETW. I'd like to record the stack trace of the UI thread with our own metadata. I got all of that, but how do I submit, to ETW, a different stack trace, namely that of the UI thread? My detector successfully samples it from another thread, but ETW stacks are from the location which writes the event, which I don't care about.

  • I went for PerfView's .perfView.xml files, which limits tooling but provides the capaibliity I need right now. Seems impossible in ETW, in general at least.
