WCF Packet Inspection RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Can anyone advise the best method and tool for inspecting packets that are sent across a network by WCF. I need to inspect packets that are returned by a RESTful service I am writing.

    Thanks in advance
    M

  • Do you want to inspect the packets on the wire... or the messages being received and sent?

If you want to inspect packets on the wire... then there is nothing specific to WCF involved--you just need to find a tool that can do packet inspection.

For WCF, you can always turn on tracing and use the SVC trace viewr tool.  Here is a link for configuring tracing: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms733025.aspx

If you want to inspect messages being recieved and sent, then you can use a message inspector class.  Here's a blog entry about how to write a message inspector:  http://weblogs.asp.net/paolopia/archive/2007/08/23/writing-a-wcf-message-inspector.aspx
