  • Microsoft Endpoint Protection for Azure' real-time protection feature alerts you when viruses, spyware and other potentially unwanted software attempts to install itself or run on your virtual machine. You can choose which actions are automatically applied to software for low and medium threats that Microsoft Endpoint Protection for Azure detects.  For severe threats, certain actions will automatically be taken to remove the malicious software and protect your virtual machine from potential further infection. Once the malicious software is removed, Microsoft Endpoint Protection for Azure may also reset some Windows settings (such as your home page and search provider).

Note: Endpoint Protection is part of Azure Security Center and you can choose this option in both free tier and standard tier.

Security Center is offered in two tiers:

The Free tier provides visibility into the security state of your Azure resources, basic security policy, security recommendations, and integration with security products and services from partners.

The Standard tier adds advanced threat detection capabilities, including threat intelligence, behavioral analysis, anomaly detection, security incidents, and threat attribution reports. The Standard tier is free for the first 60 days. Should you choose to continue to use the service beyond 60 days, we automatically start to charge for the service. To upgrade, select Pricing Tier in the security policy.

For more details, refer “Security Center pricing”.

  • To confirm which tier includes Antivirus ?  We just want to be sure that our VMs in Azure are protected. If there is no other 3rd party AV/malware applications running is the free version enough or should we use standard ?

  • Both the tiers include Antivirus.

Free tier contains Microsoft Antimalware as the select endpoint protection.

Standard tier contains Microsoft Antimalware and third-party applications as the select endpoint protection.

For more details, refer “Install antimalware on Azure VMs”.

  • ATP - Advanced Threat Protection pricing aligns with Azure Security Center standard tier at $15/node/month, where each protected VM is counted as one node. The first 60 days after enablement are considered a free trial period and are not charged.

For more information, see the Azure Security Center pricing page.
