2D game development


  • I am in the process of learning DirectX and how to make a 2D game for the store.  The plan is to have a 2D scrolling platform game and I'm wondering if it's better to use D2D BeginDraw()/EndDraw() for the graphics or to use the normal D3D rendering pipeline with buffers and shaders while keeping the z-axis constant in my matrices?

  • The choice of API here is largely a matter of personal preference. 2D scrolling games are more or less just a lot of sprites. Direct2D can support this, as well as Direct3D. The only real technical factor here is if you are looking at porting to Windows phone 8 which does not support Direct2D.

    If you decide to go the route of using Direct3D, you may find the SpriteBatch class in the DirectXTK library useful.
