.NET Framework 4 Setup Error .NET Runtime EventID 0 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I've been investigating this for a while and I am still without a working solution. I am building a Windows Server 2003 32bits image with all updates slipstreamed using the /slipstream on each package. After installation, I have no errors in the Event Viewer and even dotnetfx35.exe doesn't create errors. However, when using Windows Updates to installing .NET 4, I get a hundred errors regarding access to files. Here's an example:

    The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Unable to read runtime version for ehtray.exe - Error 0.

    I know it has something to do with the access to the registry keys located in HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\policy\AppPatch\. Anyone got a suggestion regarding this issue? This is rather annoying to have a clean installation working flawlessly but with a hundred errors in the Event Viewer.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

    Welcome to the MSDN Forum.

    Have tried use the standalone installer to install .NET Framework 4.0?

    If you cannot get .NET Framework 4.0 installed by Windows Update, you can try to install it manually. You can download the .NET Framework 4.0 standalone installer from this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7

    Before install .NET Framework, please finish the steps below:

    -          Turn off your anti-virus/antispyware software during installation;

    -          Install the latest Windows updates from the Windows Update site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com;

    -          Complete or dismiss Windows Update before installation. (And don't forget to turn it on later)

    If you have any concerns, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Andrew,

    I've tried with both Windows Updates and .NET Stand-alone installer and they both create dozens of EventID 0 errors in the Application Log of the Event Viewer. I'm slipstreaming 111 updates into the Server 2003 R2 SP2 image and I think that some updates might create a conflict during the installation. Do you have anyway ideas if any of the following updates have something to do with it? I've tried about 50 updates without errors and when I added these to the batch of slipstreamed updates, the conflicts appeared.

    Thank you,

    Eric

    Edit: Please note that the installation is successfull in both cases. I'm just annoyed by the dozens if not hundred error messages in the application log since this is going in a massive deployment environment.

  • Hi Eric,

    Thanks for posting back.

    As far as I know, Windows will automatic check whether a update has installed or not, if you have already installed a updates, Windows will not install it again.

    There are several things I would like to clarify with you:

    ·         I find "The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer." in your initial post. Did you install the system from a remote computer?

    ·         You said the installation of .NET Framework 4.0 is succeed, are there any errors/problems while using the .NET Framework 4.0? Or just the error messages in the Event Viewer?

    ·         If possible, would you please provide the logs in the Event Viewer for further support?

    I hope this will helps.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi guys,

    I am having exactly the same problems on Windows Server 2003.  It displays this exact message for various executable files.  Did you guys find a resolution for this?

    Thanks,

    David

  • same eventlog errors here on Windows 7 clients installed via SCCM 2007 OSD (Task Sequence).

    .Net Framework 4 is installed during OSD as well, using original EXE file.

    Please note: installation during OSD is done using SYSTEM account. Maybe this is an issue?
