Installing on Windows 7

Question
-
Hi,
I want to install Visual Studio Express 2008. But... it isnt working. I have windows 7 - probably that is the problem.
I downloaded the "vbsetup.exe" from http://www.microsoft.com/express/Downloads/#2008-Visual-Basic
The error message is: setup.exp has stopped working
"a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Well... it is a problem. But there was no solution given by windows!
And then I get the error "Setup cannot install the following components"
Visual C++ Runtime Pre- requisites
Setup did not attempt to install the following components...
Microsoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 SP1...
and there is a list of other things.
I have a lenovo icore 7. (if that helps)

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your post.
I have installed Visual Studio 2008 Express products on Windows 7 64 bit machine. They work well.
For your concern, could you please help me to try the following steps for further troubleshooting?
1. Check whether you have turned on the windows feature of .NET Framework 3.5.1.
Please go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off -> Check the box next to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1.
2. If .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 are verified successfully but the installation still fails, please collect the log file.
The steps to collect the log:
- Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
- Install VB2008 Express Edition
(The installer must be run with administrator privileges - Right-click the installer >> "Run as Administrator")
- Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
Collect tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx
- Send vslogs.cab file to me (v-yicche@microsoft.com)
Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Yichun Chen

I had to reinstall everything on my computer and then install again with the CD. So there must have been something I altered in the system settings that was causing all the issues.

Have you tried downloading the ISO file to burn to a c.d. instead?

Hi again Jeff_NewUser ,
Which ISO file did you try? You might like to try with the other one?
On Windows 7 are you running under an administrator account? Yes or No?
You can check what type of account you have on Windows 7 , from Control Panel select User Accounts .
Make sure any application file you right-click on is not in a ZIP file or within an ISO image or within a CAB
file or any other kind of compressed file format.
Then when you right-click on an application you should see RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR like this.>>

John
P.S: Failing all that you might like to see if contacting Microsoft in your country is any help.
Tell them that you have tried asking in the MSDN forums, they will know what you mean. :-)

I logged in as the administrator. I had to "add" the administrative privaledges by going here... http://windows7news.com/2009/02/03/enable-or-disable-the-windows-7-administrator-account/
Is logging in as administrator = admin privileges?

I tried installing the redistribution package:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?familyId=bd2a6171-e2d6-4230-b809-9a8d7548c1b6&displayLang=en
But it will not install.
I get the error message: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package vc_red.msi in the box below.
Do you know what the problem is?Tuesday, March 2, 2010 1:01 AM -
I installed the redistributio package.
The problem must be that I cannot install the runtime prerequisites.
Can't you just send them to me by email and I will download?
The problems I am having are similiar to the link: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/Vsexpressinstall/thread/5fcc498c-5d84-4510-b8d3-ddfeec7fc95eTuesday, March 2, 2010 1:28 AM -
Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your email.
For error code "1612", it means "The installation source for this product is not available."
To isolate the possible cause of the installer, could you please try some download manager software to download offline install and run the installer of VB2008 inside this ISO package?
(Please search "Offline Install")
Or you can mount the ISO image to a virtual CD drive, using another 3rd party tool something like MSVCD or Winzip, and run the installation from here.
If it doesn't work, you might try manually installing Visual C++ Runtime Pre-requisites in the path: ....\VBExpress\WCU\vcredist_x86.exe. After this component has been well installed, please run the installer of VB2008 again to complete the installation.
If there is still any problem during the installation, please help me to collect the log files again to track the cause.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks for the reply.
1. Where is the location of ".\VBExpress\WCU\", and also where do I get the runtime prerequisites. I think the issue is that I dont have themn in the first place.
2. The offline install link you gave is the place where I downloaded the "vbsetup.exe" But this takes me through an online download. I searched for offline install in google and microsoft but could not find anything.

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for your reply.
To download the offline install, please open the link that I posted above and check the following screen shot:
Click "Free Download".
After downloading the ISO image, please extract it by using some 3rd-party tools like Winzip. You can go to the path: ....\VBExpress\WCU\vcredist_x86.exe from the extracted file.
Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

It helps me out of the problem, Thanks for your explanation!Saturday, December 18, 2010 8:41 AM -
To anyone else that is having this problem my fix ended up being manually installing the runtime pre-requisites file \WCU\vcredistmin_x86.exe as suggested earlier. When it gave the error that the file could not be found, I simply did a file search for the requested file, and browsed the installer to the new location. Install worked perfect after that! I'm still confused why Windows Installer kept insisting on referencing the wrong location! Also, unless you run the vc_redistmin_x86.exe file manually, it does not give you the option of specifying a different location.
Hope this helps someone else with the msi 1612 error, I tried everything else I could find!
