Prices for Lightswitch RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I own a copy of Visual Studio 2011 Prof and I would like to purchase Visual Studio Lightswitch 2011.

However if, I try to buy for the promo price of 199$, it is not possible because I live in Germany.

The German price is about 341$.

For what reason is the price so much higher????

  • It may be that the promotional price is not available in Germany. Within Microsoft, different regions often set their own prices.

Also, when US prices are quoted they usually exclude sales tax because each state (and some cities) levy different taxes. (Usually a total tax of 5% - 10%.)

Prices in Europe are usually quoted including VAT (Value Added Tax) (usually 15% - 20% but some countries are higher and some lower). Prices are generally quoted including VAT because that is the price you have to pay (whether or not you can subsequently claim the VAT portion back).

These differences can make quoted US prices appear cheaper than ones from Europe. To compare prices you either have to add sales tax to the US price or remove the VAT from the european price.

  • Thanks for the link.

    That's €205.88 plus €39.12 VAT (19%) = €245

€205.88 = US$283.56 which is still significantly more (42% more) than the $199 price in the US.

    $199 = €144.49 + €27.45 VAT = €171.94

It is worse in the UK where Lightswitch costs £187 + VAT which is $299.65 (50.6% more than in the US). (Yet that £187 price is still marked as 1/3rd off!)

Microsoft, and many other companies, will claim "currency fluctuations" and the "cost of doing business in overseas territories" as the reasons for the difference but won't say anything about "price points" or "what the market will bear".

So, if you don't like one seller's price look for a different seller.

Try componentsource.com where they are selling LightSwitch for €156 or £129
    http://www.componentsource.com/products/visual-studio-lightswitch/index-eur.html

    (€156 = $214.86, a much better match).
