Bing Maps Wrong Mappings in Austria RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Microsoft/Bing,

I've found out that there  are three counties in Austria, which are not mapped at all in Bing-Maps and therefore are (not) shown in Excel-PowerMap and PowerBI-Map.
The three counties are: "Salzburg-Umgebung", "Innsbruck-Land" and "Wels-Land". These are not shown as Counties when looking in Bing-Maps on the map (e.g. "Obertrum am See" is a village/city in "Salzburg-Umgebung").

    Please Help

    Thanks

    Mario

  • I took a look at these. All of these seem to have cities with the same or similar name and those are higher ranked when geocoding. As such those locations are being used to retrieve the boundaries, which ends up return the boundary for the county over the city, which is the equivalent of the "greater" city boundary. In any case I believe this is a known issue and doing some testing against an update we have planned for our geocoder in a few months it looks like the results will much more aligned with what you would expect.

  • As I mentioned in my response it looks like an upcoming update will improve this.

  • For Innsbruck-Land, the issue there is what I mentioned before where there are cities that have similar names. The GeoData API that power BI uses to get the boundaries doesn't return names, so Power BI is incorrectly saying that the city boundary is the county boundary. This should all be resolved in a few months when we do a major update to our geocoder.

  • oh that is really bad, as Microsoft Austria want some big companies to use PowerBI, PowerMaps and so forth. I was there doing some training and so far these issues will prevent them from using Microsoft!

I need a solution with high priority - also for Microsoft ... Austria ...

    Thanks

  • yes, of course, but first, a "few months" are a long time to go, as decisions about tools to use take place now. and second, the algorithm isn't that clear, as it works for "Sankt Pölten Land", "Steyr Land" and "Linz Land" for example. They are very (!!!) similar (esp. "Linz Land") but they show up correctly.

see picture (yellow the special names that work, only the yellow "island" on the left is "Insbruck Land" which is mapped incorrect):

So it works in some cases and not in others. That is what looks so strange to me.

    Best

    Graz Umgebung Works
Wels-Land Does not Work (shown as Wels)
Salzburg-Umgebung Does not Work (shown as Salzburg)
Innsbruck-Land Does not Work (shown as Innsbruck-Land, but drawn in Innsbruck   - > strangest)

  • Hi and thanks again, I found one major error:

If one uses "Salzburg Land" instead of "Salzburg Umgebung" than Bing maps "Sankt Johann im Pongau" to that region name. Absolutely incorrect.

For Wels-Land and Innsbruck-Land: These are mapped to the cities. Though in Steyr-Land and Linz-Land this is not the case.

Can you help me with the erroneous region …

    Thanks and best

  • I've found a solution:

One has to map "Wels Land" to "Marchtrenk" (which is a small city in this count, but anyhow)

"Salzburg-Umgebung" to "Thalgau" which again is a smaller administrative unit

and finally "Innsbruck Land" has to be mapped to "Seefeld in Tirol" again not a County but a City in this County.

But as I said, this is a solution, not the best, but at least it works.

    Best
