Cannot find the Virtual Directory of ReportServer in IIS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

the Report Server installed successfully with MS SQL Server 2008.

In Report Services Configuration Manager I can see:

Report Server Web Service Virtual Directory
    Virtual Directory:  ReportServer

Through the the navigation pane (left)
    Web Service URL
    und then lower right:
    Report Server Web Service URLs
    URLs:   http://myservername:80/ReportServer

    I successfully open the URL.

Question: Nowwhere in IIS Manager of this server is a Virtual Directory, neither one of the name ReportServer.

I can create a new VD named ReportServer and then open it. I can again delete this Virtual Directory "ReportServer" and - miraculously the ReportServer URL in the configuration Manager still works.

Could s.o. please explain? Where is the Virtual Directory ReportServer which the SQL Server 2008 installation impements by default?
These things make Admins crazy. MS should not do these secret or special exceptions to all obvious rules.
If there is a Virtual Directory, it should pop up and show in IIS Manager.

    Sincerely

    Andreas

  • Hello Andreas,

SSRS 2008 don't use the IIS, it bring's its own http.sys, so you won't find anything of SSRS 2008 in IIS.

The previous version SSRS 2005 used IIS.

  • Please note that any configuration related to SSRS server and report manager (such as web service url, report manager url, service account etc.)needs to be done now using the reporting services configuration manager in SSRS 2008 and beyond. You can find it in, start-->all programs-->sql server 2008-->configuration tools-->reporting services configuration manager.
