AzCopy treatment of file metadata RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are evaluating AzCopy as a possible means of uploading archival data to Azure and downloading the data if and as needed. Some of the data is on Windows servers and some on Linux servers. When a download creates an on-premises file, which parts of the file's metadata will be the same as the metadata of the original on-premises file? Will the permissions and update time be the same? For a Linux file, will the owner and group be the same?

  • Firstly, apologies for the delay in responding here and any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Are you referring to Metadata preservation am I correct?

    It is for Archiving.

Placing the data in cold storage and then apply policy on it to move it to archive after a period of time when the file is not accessed.

The Storage REST API sets the system metadata (in this case: created date) when the blob is created. If you want to preserve the original create date, then currently you need to save that as user metadata.

We are looking at a feature to preserve the original info in system metadata in lift-n-shift type scenarios.

As an owner of your Azure Storage account, you aren't automatically assigned permissions to access data. Before you can do anything meaningful with AzCopy, you need to decide how you'll provide authorization credentials to the storage service.

Optional. Specifies a user-defined name-value pair associated with the blob. If no name-value pairs are specified, the operation will copy the metadata from the source blob or file to the destination blob. If one or more name-value pairs are specified, the destination blob is created with the specified metadata, and metadata is not copied from the source blob or file. Note that beginning with version 2009-09-19, metadata names must adhere to the naming rules for C# identifiers. See Naming and Referencing Containers, Blobs, and Metadata for more information.

    Hope this helps!
