Best Database --> Performance of SQL 2005 versus DB2 Version 9 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am going to do a lot of bulk inserts (like BCP). Currently I have to decide between SQL Server 2005 and DB2 Server. Assuming that there are 2 servers with the exact same configuration (same CPU type, same RAM and same Hard disk etc.. ).

If I am doing a Bulk Insert of 10 million records into a table in SQL 2005 and into a table in DB2 (the table structure is the same in both the databases ) , I would like to know where is the bulk insert (or BCP) going to take place faster. Is DB2 faster or SQL server 2005 faster.

    Thanks in Advance.

  • There are 4 options to in SQL Server

    1. BCP
    2. Bulk Insert
    3. OpenRowset with BULK option
    4. SQL Server Integration Services - SSIS

of the 4 options SSIS is the fastest.

Where as in the DB2 scenerio you have
    Load utility
    Import utility

Load utility is the high performant

On top SQL server will allow doing bulk data loading in online mode as well
