I suggest that you invest in a subscription to Safari Books at http://www.safaribooksonline.com/.
Now to particular books - I recommend that you start with O'Reilly Books - their books are written by an expert in the field on the basis of experience with the released product. They are reviewed for accuracy and clarity. Their books tend to be more
reasonably priced than books from other publishers.
For a complete beginner, I would recommend Murach at http://www.murach.com/books - his book list at http://www.murach.com/books/index.htm shows titles for ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL2005.
Both O'Reilley and Murach provide sample chapters.
