  • The first thing you should do with your fresh XP install is apply all service packs through SP3.

As far as .NET Frameworks are concerned, which version(s) you need will be determined by the programs you want to install and use.

Properly written program installers will check for a program's needed .NET Framework version, then either prompt you to install that version or automatically install it for you.

I suggest you let the program installation process take care of any needed .NET Framework versions. Why install software that serves no purpose on your system?

If there is some unique circumstance that you have not described that makes my suggestion impractical, please post back and I'll do my best to accommodate your needs.

FYI, there are presently four complete .NET Frameworks that have been released:

1.0 (you're very unlikely to need this as it was released in 2002 and only current until 1.1 came out in 2003)

1,1 (you're also unlikely to need this unless you have some really old programs)

2.0/3.0/3.5 (you're likely to need this, and the entire set is available through one cumulative installer)

4.0 (you'll likely need this for latest software versions)
