Set up a KMS host in azure server VM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear all,

I have a customer which has windows 8.1 embedded industry Pro client PC that he would like to be automatically activated through a central licence server.

I have browse the web and see different post on how to setup a kms host server. Note that my customer have Windows 8.1 emebeded industry Pro volume licence key

So as a test purpose, I create a Server 2012 VM on Azure and install the Volume Licence activation role.

When complete it ask me to specify a KMS host key.

What is that KMS host key that I need to provide ?

I guess it is not the activation key of Azure server 2012 as it is by default already activated.

Is it the Windows 8.1 volume key I need to specify here ?

    thanks for clarification

    regards

    serge

  • Hi Serge,
      Sorry for the confusion.
althogh the Azure VM is already activated, they do not have KMS functionality, in order to activate KMS functionality, a KMS Host key has to be installed (that will replace the existing key), the host is then activated over the internet or by phone using Microsoft's activation services.
The KMS Host key is not free, it has to be purchased from Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/default.aspx)

  • Hi Serge,

    Thanks for Posting.

What is a KMS Host Key?
A KMS Host Key is used to activate the KMS host computer with a Microsoft activation server and can activate up to six (6) KMS hosts with 10 activations per host. Each KMS host can activate an unlimited number of computers.

Please refer to the following link.

For Detailed steps on how to setup KMS Host refer to the below link

  • thanks for your reply, I can read as I browse all day for all the resource you point me out but it is not clear at all what is extactly this Host KMS key is .

For instance, I have set up an Windows server 2012 datacenter R2 on Azure with the licence activation role installed.

AS this VM is provided directly by Microsoft, it is already activated !!!

So once again my question is clear I think, what is this Host Key that need to be inserted here:

    - Is it a new Server 2012 R2 key that need to be ask to Microsoft ?

    Thnaks for your reply
