Password protecting docs in library in Sharepoint2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • In SharePoint 2010, is it possible to password protect a document in a library so that when a user attempts to access it, they are prompted to enter a password before they are allowed to see the "web view" of the document? Trying to do this instead of putting a password protect on the document itself before uploading to it to a library. While doing it that way works, it's a bit clunky when trying to access the document in Sharepoint.

  • There's no way to do what you describe in SharePoint 2010.  SharePoint handles security by separating Authentication and Authorization.  By the time the user clicks on the document it is just checking Authorization (can the user open the document) not Authentication (userid and password).
