Create promotional codes for my parents? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I published my first WP8 app with in-add-purchases today. How can I give this app and the add-ins to my wife for free?

I developed this app and I don't want pay for my app. Is it possible to create a promotional-code? Or give the app to some users for free?

I have the app as beta version, but it will expire. I want the original one, for me and maybe also for some other friends. I was thinking that it was possible, but I don't know how.

    Thanks!

    Adriano

  • Microsoft doesn't support promotional codes for the Windows Phone Store at this time. One alternative you should consider is creating a separate submission for your app, but mark it as free. You can even hide the submission from the Store so it will only be visible by deep-link. You can also choose to un-publish the app after it's downloaded by your intended users.

  • If you are asking if microsoft was this kind of service implemented to the devs, the answer is no.

But you can implement it by yourself, a good service that supports this kind of operations is Buddy

    Thank you Danny.

It is a workaround, but not a solution. What if I want give the app to blogs administrators, so they can test my app?

With your solution, the XAP could finish in the wrong hands and then it will be available on the warez pages for free. Even if I unpublish the app, the XAP could be downloaded for a offline installation.

It is sad, that Microsoft has so limited developer tools. On Symbian I paid 1€ to be a developer. On WP8, I pay 110€ each year and I have the same tools (I was expecting something more, for the money).

@DVD_PT: Thanks for the reply, but I don't want use a new SDK (I am new to WP8, and I want learn the SDK of this OS :)).

  • You misunderstand what Danny said, when you publish an app and mark it as hidden, only people that have the app link can download it, those people you can control.

If you are worried about manual installs don't forget that is necessary a live id to install on a device, and if the user didn't bought the app it will be necessary to do so.

Don't worry about piracy, you will never be able to be 100% safe from it, and the microsoft does a very good job prevent it.

  • It's been almost a year since this question was answered.

Does MS still not support promo codes?

    Thanks

  • Hello Sistah_M,

Microsoft introduced gift cards last year in some markets. This would be the closest mechanism that exists for your request.
