Increase size of web pages when viewed in browser RRS feed

  • Question

  • I used on of the frame templates in expression Web 3.  When I preview the web pages on my browser the page only covers about half of the screen.  The rest is a blue border on both sides of the page to fill the screen.  How do I increase the width of the web page?

  • Frame templates?

I hope not.  Frames are a very bad idea.

Regardless, the way you change the width of a webpage is to edit the CSS that defines the widths involved.

  • I suspect this is a terminology issue since none of the templates that ship with Expression Web are frames based. Most likely it is the background showing around the content div.

  • Yeah, I think the OP doesn't know what a frameset is, and he's actually talking about a fixed-width template. Some of those provided templates really are kind of narrow, as if targeted for an 800 pixel display (760px width), as Bill and Jim have noted in the past.

The answer, of course, is to adjust the widths of the container and each of the columns to that desired, doing so in the external style sheet assigned to the template. That, naturally, presumes knowledge and understanding of HTML and CSS, as does the use of EW itself. Just guessing here, but from the nature of the question, I'd say that that might be lacking in this case.

To the OP, be aware that there is a limit to how much you should increase the width of a page, considering that it needs to be able to be displayed on everything from a smartphone to a 30" monitor. Also be aware that EW is not a WYSIWYG application, and you must know HTML and CSS to use it. That is not optional.

    scott

  • There are frame pages templates shipped with EW3 and 4 -

    File->New->Page, choose from:
    General
    ASP.NET
    CSS Layouts
    Style Sheets
    Frames Pages

However, these templates all provide 100% width to the page - so the terminology used may be suspect.

A link to a published page will clarify the matter.

  • No, there are not. There are individual frame-based pages available from the File menu. There are no frame templates available from the templates menu under "Site|New Site...|Templates."

The OP said, "I used on [sic] of the frame templates..." Now, he may have been referring to one of the pages in the File menu, mistakenly referring to it as a template, or one of the templates in the Site menu, mistakenly referring to one of the layouts as a frame layout. His meaning is ambiguous and confusing, which is what we have said from the beginning.

    cheers,
    scott
