Format of MS Bing Base Maps and its data sources

    Question

  • Hi there!

I am looking for more information about your base map API.

    I would love to know:

    • Where is the data sourced for the base maps? And how often is the source data updated? E.g. roads, properties etc.
    • What is the format the base map files are provided in? E.g. png? .mvt?
    • What is the imagery format used? WMS?
    • How old is your aerial and satellite imagery? Particularly for Victoria, Australia.
    • Who sources the MS Bing Imagery?
    • And what scale and pitch can be configured into the imagery visualisation?

Really looking forward to hearing from you,

    Many thanks, Kerri

  • Hi Kerry,

I'll give your questions a shot:

    1. Where is the data sourced for the base maps? And how often is the source data updated? E.g. roads, properties etc - Our main source for our base maps is HERE but we partner with other providers as well.  If you look at the bottom corner of Bing.com\maps you will see attributions for the sources for the particular map area you are viewing. Updates are applied every week but we refresh cities at a faster cadence than the countryside as change happens faster in urban locales.
    2. What is the format the base map files are provided in? E.g. png? .mvt?  - These are raster tiles using a Mercator co-ordinate system.  You can find out more at https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb259689.aspx
    3. What is the imagery format used? WMS? - You access the tiles via URL as described here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt823633.aspx
    4. How old is your aerial and satellite imagery? Particularly for Victoria, Australia. - This is a tough question as any view you might have will have various dates.  The only way to know the date range for the map tiles you are viewing is to request the Imagery metadata for the region you are viewing.  The information on this API is available here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff701716.aspx
    5. Who sources the MS Bing Imagery? - Members of the Bing Maps Engineering team work with partner providers to source our Map data.
    6. And what scale and pitch can be configured into the imagery visualization?  First is zoom of the tile as documented here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa940990.aspx.  the oblique view is collects but planes fliring in a grid formation so the oblique angle should be consistent.

    I hope that helps!
