How to remote into an azure web role RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I've just deployed my first web role to a production server.  I thought I remembered that remote access was supported in 1.3   The "Enable" checkbox in the tabstrip of the management portal is grayed out.  Is this a feature that I can somehow enable? If so, how??

  • When you're deploying via Visual Studio, click the "Configure Remote Desktop connections..." link.  This has to be done at deployment to include the remote desktop plugin in your app and get the credentials securely to the app.  Once you've done that, you should be able to enable and disable remote desktop via the portal (as well as actually connect).

  • thanks.  where do I get the certificate? I tried "create new", entered my own friendly name and it created an "untrusted" cert.  When I try to UPDATE from the portal I get an error on that.

  • Did you upload the certificate in the portal after you created it?  Find the "certificates" node under the hosted service and click "Add Certificate" to upload it.

  • I'm feeling a little dense here.  When I created the remote access cert from vs2010, I got some lines in my ServiceConfiguration.cscfg file that look like this:

     <Certificates>
       <Certificate name="Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Plugins.RemoteAccess.PasswordEncryption" thumbprint="F9ExxxEA37" thumbprintAlgorithm="sha1" />
      </Certificates>

    In my portal, I have a Managed Certificate Section that let's me at x.509 certs (.cer files).  I don't have any .cer files in my vs2010 solution.

    What am I not understanding?

  • You need to use MMC to export the certificate as a CER file from the certificate store of your computer. You can then upload that to the Managed Certificate section of the Azure portal. You need to make sure that the thumbprints match.

  • jimoneil have the best blog showing the step by step procedure.

    And the main issue that one face is the upload location and export or relative certificates and jimoneil's blog explain it nicely by small video too.
