Unable to RDP to Windows 8 Hyper-V VM RRS feed

  • Question

  • From (Windows 7 or XP) physical client I try to RDP to a Windows 8 VM machine hosted on a Server 2008 SP2

    Symptom:

RDP windows fails with a message "Your remote desktop session has ended" after several minutes.

Sometimes the RDP window is black and sometimes some of the Windows 8 logon icons are displayed but always unresponsive.

    Background:

Hyper-V is running on a physical server running Windows Server 2008 SP2
I have 2 virtual machines configured one running Windows 7 and the other Windows 8
I have 2 physical client pc's one running Windows 7 the other Windows XP

All machines belong to the same local domain.

Remote access to the Windows 7/8 is permitted using the less secure option.
(i.e. Network Level Authentication is NOT required)

    * I am NOT able to RDP from the client to the Windows 8 pc
    * I am able to RDP from the client to the Windows 7 pc
    * I am able to RDP from the Server 2008 to the Windows 8 pc. (i.e. from the host to the hosted VM)
    * I am able to RDP from the Windows 7 virtual pc to the Windows 8 virtual pc.

    Things I have tried:

    • I am able to ping the Windows 8 pc (and the RDP does locate the pc.)
    • I have tried turning off the Windows firewall on the Windows 8 pc but still not able to RDP.
    • The event logs on the client and target (Windows 8 pc) do not have any entries relating to this issue.

The Windows 8 virtual pc is new and has no anti-virus software installed
(Only installed applications are Office and SQL Server 2012)

    1) Why can I not RDP from the physical clients to the Windows 8 pc?

    2) (or) What trouble shooting actions can I perform?

    Siggy
