Ghost folders created on message stores with no mail accounts associated. RRS feed

  • Question

  • There is a bug in the Outlook 2010 sp2 release ( outlook 2010 works fine), where a ghost folder is getting created for every folder sent/outbox query on an offline Outlook data store folder.

    Steps to simulate the bug,

1 install Outlook 2010 and update to office sp2

2 Install Outlook spy outlook addin

3 Create an empty Outlook Data File

4 Select the empty data file folder added or its subfolder and click the store button in the Outlook spy ribbon

5 in the script tab run the below scripts one by one

Store.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderDrafts)  ;creates drafts folder when it doesnt exist

         Store.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderSentMail) ;  creates a random junk folder

Store.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderOutbox) ; Same creates a random junk folder

If outlook is closed and repoened, rerunning sequences 5,6 creates ghosts folders in the offline outlook data store. In outlook 2010 it just throws exception.

  • For what it's worth - did this on 2 systems - both with '2010 SP2 32bit installed using OutlookSpy

#1 - XP 32bit - get a VBScript error for the Sent Mail/ Outbox items (Draft folder works)

#2 - W7 64bit - repro's the error with Sent Mail or Outbox (Draft Folder works)
*** Need to close/restart Outlook in order to be able to delete the "ghost" folder so not clear what you're referring to in the original post about closing/opening O'2010 and "it just throws an error"

Unfortunately don't have '2010 installed on the one W8 32 bit machine I have available just to see if the OS bit level makes any difference for any reason. Also consistent to what appears to be an almost identical issue found when the Norton Anti Spam & Virus addin is installed given reports in other forums.

  • Hi Noviez,

    >>In outlook 2010 it just throws exception<<

Could you provide us the detail error message? And what do you mean by "Ghost Foder", is it a folder created by Outlookspy?

Since OutlookSpy is a third party Add-in, for OutlookSpy specific questions, I would suggest you to Contact OutlookSpy Support for more efficient help.

    Thanks for your coperations

  • Hi ,

this is not related to outlookspy,

We have an addin for outlook which queries the individual message stores folders, Since it was an easy repro with outlookspy i mentioned the steps.

With the recent outlook 2010 sp2 update whenever we query for "sent items" and "outbox" folders in a offline outlook data file, it  creates empty folders with the name as seen in the screen shot (http://oi41.tinypic.com/2mzb3wi.jpg)

  • What's displayed in the screenshot is generally caused by the Norton Outlook addin. Do you have it or another 3rd party A/V addin installed?

  • Hi Karl,

I can confirm that there is no other addin installed, I checked this on a clean outlook installation. With outlook sp2 installed this should be a easy one to repro.
