  • Yes,  you can create any SharePoint group out of FBA Users,

    For that you have to add FBA Membership Provider and Role Provider entry in your web.config of Central Admin and Your website.

    Also to search such users  you will have to add that entry in peoplePickerWildCards

    <PeoplePickerWildcards>
          <clear />
          <add key="AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" value="%" />
          <add key="Custom_FBA_MembershipProvider" value="%" />

        </PeoplePickerWildcards>

  • You can try Community Kit for SharePoint: Internet/Extranet Edition Forms-Based Authentication solution (I haven't tried it). Here is a link to blog post on sharepoint team blog about this http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2007/10/13/announcing-the-community-kit-for-sharepoint-internet-extranet-edition-forms-based-authentication-solution.aspx
