Known issues with editing XAML in the Windows 8 Developer Preview RRS feed

  • Question

  • This post collects solutions for some issues you might encounter when trying to build Windows Metro style apps with XAML. We will add more issues to this list over time.

The mouse never stops dragging when trying to manipulate an object on the XAML design surface in Visual Studio 11.
A patch for the XAML designer is available at https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=38599

The XAML designer in Visual Studio 11 does not support editing complex templates or animations

Use Expression Blend 4 to create XAML styles and animations then copy and paste the XAML into your XAML project.

Expression Blend 4 crashes when trying to run after installing on a Windows 8 machine with .Net 4.5 or Visual Studio 11 installed.
Open a command prompt window with administrative privileges and then run the following commands:

    C:\> %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ngen uninstall "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Expression\Blend 4\Microsoft.Expression.Framework.dll"
    C:\> %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ngen uninstall "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Expression\Blend 4\Microsoft.Expression.Blend.dll"
    C:\> %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ngen uninstall "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Expression\Blend 4\Microsoft.Expression.Project.dll"

If you have installed Expression Blend 4 SP1 you must also uninstall the native image of the Microsoft.Expression.WindowsPhone.dll file from the cache:
    C:\> %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ngen uninstall "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Expression\Blend 4\Microsoft.Expression.WindowsPhone.dll"

Visual Studio Designer for Windows Metro Style Apps for C# , VB & C++ cannot be displayed when running Visual Studio with elevated privileges.

Trying to design a XAML file when Visual Studio 11 is running elevated will display the following error.  This is expected behavior.

The Designer cannot be displayed when running with elevated privileges. Please restart this program in non-elevated mode to enable the Designer.
