new explorer misses view remote printers button RRS feed

  • Question

  • When viewing a network pc in windows explorer as in \\pc-name there were a "printers and faxes" folder. In win 7 it moved to command bar and was named "view remote printers"

and in win 8 developer preview it is gone. There should be a way to access that rpc endpoint.

Help me find it or say it'll be back in a final release.

  • Try the following:
Open desktop control panel: Start -> Settings -> More Settings

    Click on Hardware and Sound

Click on Advanced printer setup.  The option to Select a shared printer by name and its associated Browse button may be what you're looking for.

  • Hi Alexander, the "View Remote Printers" button got shuffled off when the ribbon was added. Our preferred mechanism for managing remote printers is to use the Print Management Console (printmanagement.msc).

  • print management console does not provide the functionality of "view remote printers" button, where i can group and filter and search as well as see driver, location, comment and status of printers all in one place.

  • And another management feature that comes with "view remote printers" button is the ability to manage drivers on remote client computers which is extremely important in a corporate environment that I represent (>35k computers)

  • The full set of Explorer commands is located in the registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell. The Ribbon is yet to expose many of these. Hopefully by the beta, all of the Ribbon commands will be shown.
