Activation by phone

    Question

  • Hello, I have installed Windows 8 Developer's Preview on a separate partition (clean install) of my HDD. However I can't activate it as I can't install my USB Modem (no driver available for Windows 8) and hence can't connect to internet. Also I can't activate it by phone as it gives error on clicking "Activate by phone" in Control Panel. The error is something about some .dll not being found. Is this some issue with developer build that activation by phone is not supported?

  • The only way to activate the Windows 8 Developer Preview is online. Phone activation is not available.

If Windows 7 drivers exist they might work with your modem.

Have you installed the newest drivers? If not download them from the manufacturers website. Some drivers might be available using Windows update.

    Download Drivers

Go to the website of the manufacturer and select your computer model (this is usually done in the Support section). You should have the option to download drivers for your model. Download the driver(s) and follow the instructions to install - every computer is different so I can't give you exact directions. You can also try using Windows Update to get drivers - it's located in the start menu.

Since Windows 8 has not been released yet not all drivers are going to work with it. Some drivers are very specific about the operating system version, so you might have to wait until they release Windows 8 drivers (if they make them for your model).

If the drivers don't install, try installing them in compatibility mode.

    Troubleshoot Compatibility

This can help with some (but not all) programs/drivers:
    1) Uninstall the program if it's already installed. Then when you install/reinstall it instead of double clicking on the install file right click it and select "Troubleshoot Compatibility"
    2) Then click "Try Recommended Settings" and in the next windows click "Start the Program" to install it.
    3) After it installs see if it works correctly. Please note - some programs may not be able to run in Windows 8.

  • hi there,

i guess there is no phone activation on developer preview since it is not a streamline product.

as for you USB Modem, just use the drivers for Windows 7, they should work without any problem.

or, if you have access to a wired network (at a friends, at work) just get your pc connected to activate in a standard fashion.

if you need help for your modem, please just post your model so we can indicate where to find drivers.

if you are dual booting with XP/Vista, you can just go to www.ma-config.com have it detect your modem and download drivers for Windows 7...you can then use them to get your win8 system online to activate...it's free and very easy to use.

    keep us posted,

    Pierre.
