I would like to know the best tool for modeling my smart client application. I am using smart client software factory with GAT and visual studio 2005. Iam also using MSSQL 2005 Express.
I would like to easy architect my database and my smart client application as well.

  • While I personally can't recommend this (since I haven't tried it yet), I know there are people out there who really like Enterprise Architect..

There's even a book to get you started on the modeling side of things:

These are on my "to check out" list.

  • Martin,

Hi.  I think Visio would allow you to model, as will Sparx Enterprise Architect.  Although, for modelling anything more than just stock standard UML, the Visual Studio Class diagrams are also very good.  They allow you to design endpoints for web services, should you wish to use web services, as well as class diagrams, and such like.  The difference being that the VS class diagram is full round trip, meaning that changes to the code would get reflected in the diagrams.  This may or may not be what you want, depending upon whether you want your designs to live in the same place as your code.

GAT is pretty useful too, but I think that you need to make sure that you're developing an architecture that is as per your requirement, rather than what is suggested in the guidance toolkit.  If it is, then that's great, that means a lot less work.

I hope that has helped you out a little, although your next question may well be, how do I implement this architecture?!

    Good luck,
