UTM zone to Quadkey RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have a large number of xyz points that are in UTM coordinates with local zone information. I am using python and I am trying to determine which quadkey each point lies in at various zoom levels.

I think I can do it by converting the UTM coordinate to Lon/Lat and then determining the quadkey tile but I have a large number of pints (millions) and I am trying to do it without this intermediate step. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Regards

  • The easiest route is to convert your UTM to WGS84 decimal degree coordinates (lon/lat) and then use math to figure out the quadkey (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb259689.aspx

The performance will be alright. It will likely take some time to process a million plus points. The time will vary drastically depending on machine and quality of code. I have done similar type calculations in the past and have been able to complete this type of operation on 3 million+ points in a few minutes.
