    Hi,

From the error description, I think it is caused by database version mismatches with current Report Server version.

Please open All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -> Configuration Tools -> Reporting Services Configuration, select Database Setup tab and click Upgrade button.

    Thanks,
    Challen Fu

as far as I am concerned, YES, you should be able to access SSRS 2005 by using SSRS 2008, but not vice versa.

This is just like if you are trying to access your SQL 2005 by using your SQL 2008 tool, you can certainly do it. However, if you are trying to access your db in SQL 2008 by using SQL 2005 tool, you will be prompted for an error message

but i created an rdl in BIDS 2008 and i am trying to show that rdl in a web page using the report viewer control in VS 2008 ,its throwing me some error message  like this

The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is '147'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.40'. To continue, update the version of the report server database and verify access rights. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase)
