Multi-Device Communication for Multi-Player Games

    Question

  • I am creating an app for a multi-player game (a very simple one), which I want to allow people to play from separate devices (Windows Phone 8.1 Windows 8.1 devices). I don't care what technology is used for the communication (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, network). However, I do require that it can be played without me needing to host a server. The players will all be in the same room, so they will have the ability to share any information necessary to connect to each other if required. I am new to device communication, so I have almost no knowledge in this area of code (although I have been using .NET for a long time). Can anybody give me a good starting point or direct me to a good tutorial on how to have devices communicate with each other for a game or scenario like this? Thanks.

  • Start with the networking documentation at Connecting to networks and web services

Connecting with sockets and Proximity and tapping are likely sections to start with.

You'll need to specify the scenario more clearly for us to give more specific suggestions.

  • The scenario is basically each player has a set of cards, they all pick one, and then reveal, no complex stuff involved. But I think the pages you mention look like a good starting point, so I guess I'll see how far I can get from here. Thanks!
