Visual Studio 2013 Licenced pc information

    Question

  • Hi,

We have a Visual Studio 2013 License that was used on a project and now we require to use it on another project ( different user on different geographical location)

I have beeing searching the license terms and it is stated that you can install the software on any number of devices as long as it is the same user ( one user) that uses it. Because the project only is scheduled for a couple of months , we are expecting that the user uninstalls the software after the project finishes so we can use that license again on other project... but in the case that the user doesnt install the software, is there a way to detect that the license is already beeing used on another computer?

    thanks in advance.

  • Hi IMGutierrez,

    Thanks for your response.

    >> it means that we as a company dont have any way to know that our license has been used outside the use intended to?

According to your description, you want to know your software used on how many machines, is it right? In my experience, we can limit the installation count in the license. But the detailed information about how it implement this in license, I suggest you contact the license experts to get better help.

For license issue, you can call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. • Hi IMGutierrez,

The Visual Studio license is used on Visual Studio product, not used on the project that you are developing. Could you explain that how do you use it on a project?

    >> but in the case that the user doesnt install the software, is there a way to detect that the license is already beeing used on another computer?

As far as I know, you need to install Visual Studio project on your computer and then you can use the license to active this Visual Studio on your machine. And Visual Studio could not detect the license is already being used on another computer by itself. If you want to know whether it has been used on another machine or not, please back up the information when you use it on a machine. You can record the using information by yourself manually.

As you mentioned in your original post that "you can install the software on any number of devices as long as it is the same user ( one user) that uses it". So it is not related to the computer location and not related to your project count. The user should obey the Visual Studio license terms consciously.

Sorry, I was meaning that we used that specific license to develop a project, the project shipped and that specific license reamined installed on an specific computer. I think from others perspective it doesn't matter on how many projects the product is used so letting that part aside, the only concern I have is that we cannot know on how many computers it have been or is installed on, I think that the way to go is as you have said, to manually have the records of installations or make some kind of software that detects visual studio's credentials and somehow report them on a database but that would be only limited to our company.

    >>And Visual Studio could not detect the license is already being used on another computer by itself.

If in the remote case that for example a user installs the software on a personal or home computer, it means that we as a company dont have any way to know that our license has been used outside the use intended to?

    best regards.
