Does Refesh work only when WDP is the default OS in a dual boot scenario ?

    Question

  • It's an HP Desktop,Intel(R) Pentium(R)Dual CPU E2140@ 1.60GHz 1.60GHz, RAM 1.25GB, 32-bit. Start Screen was all frozen tiles, Alt-Ctrl-Del was'nt responding,  nor was any browser, restarts didn't help either. Was running well for 3 months, no fresh application / device was installed recently. Windows 7 was the default OS, placed at #1 in the conventional non-graphic boot manager since Windows7 was reinstalled while WDP was still loaded on another partition.
Tried Refresh twice, selected WDP in the boot manager, placed at #2, as target OS , the first time it failed at about 30 % with an error message given below, in the second instance had to abort at over 70% of Refresh done, same error as first one, without the tag- 'DPC watchdog Violation'.
Error: Your pc ran into a problem that it couldn't handle, and now it needs to restart.  You can search for the error online: DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION.
Tried the third time, making WDP as the default OS from the Control Panel of Windows7, and succeeded. Can I conclude: Refesh works only when WDP is the default OS in a dual boot scenario ?

  • Hello Irfan,

In researching the error you are experiencing, Session "ProtogonWmiLog" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035
I found a similar thread with the error 0xC0000035.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/2eab69ac-7537-40c4-916e-6f6d41c05d4b

A solution by Richard Vet was to:
Rename this file: %windir%\panther\setup.etl to setup.old and reboot.

The only difference was you are seeing the error in ProtogonWmiLog and Richard had the error in "Circular Kernel Context Logger".

You might try and see if this helps to remove the error.

Please reply back and let us know if this helps.

    Can you share the dump?

  • Thanks Andre.Ziegler,

could not find the memory.dmp or similarly named file/folder in the Windows folder, though I have over 38GB of free space. Nothing much in the Event viewer, Critical Errors: zero, just four similarly named errors, one is:

  • this was a differnet error.

ask it in the blog post about Reset/refresh:

Maybe Desmond Lee can answer this for you.

  • Sorry Marilyn, for missing out on this one. I will find it difficult to recreate the situation in my present setup, will definitely try as and when the situation arises on my or anyone else's pc. Thanks for trying to help.
