sql 2008 cluster p2v to hyper-v 2012 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear All,

We have an existing sql 2008 Cluster on physical servers with Fiber channel communication to the storage. Now we want to virtualize our infrasture using Hyper-v 2012 r2. we want to move our existing SQL cluster to  virtual infrastructure, is it possible?

is there any possible way to move the cluster to virtual Infra?

  • That should work, although you'll need to configure virtual fiber channel.  You can P2V the passive node and get it working while the active node is still running.  You can also add two new VM nodes to your cluster, get them working, install the SQL instance on the new nodes, fail over to the VMs and evict the old nodes.

But overall you'll get a better result if you build a new cluster with new VMs and migrate the databases, logins, jobs, etc.  In a new VM guest cluster you can use shared VHDX for storage instead of configuring virtual fiber channel to the guests, which is a simpler configuration.

  • Hi,

You can do that but you need to provide more information about how you are planing. Similar thread

AFAIK its not possible to do P2V on cluster node. You can get two separate VM's created and install windows server on them and create Windows cluster and then SQL Server cluster. Then move database using backup restore

  • Hi,

I have a sql 2008 Cluster named, SQLCLUSTER.domain.com, with 2 physical servers in the cluster using fiber channel communication to the storage.

Now we are planning for Hyper-v 2012 r2 Virtual infra, is it possible to add 2 more virtual servers to the cluster then decommission the 2 physical servers.

    or

take the backup of the databases , destroy the cluster and recreate a new cluster with same name and restore the database.

Many of our in-house applications using this sql sql cluster
