Strange program name listed in UAC prompt RRS feed

  • Question

  • My MSI is generated in VS2008 setup project, and is later signed with our authenticode license.

In the UAC prompt in Windows7, the program name is "429cd.msi"  - Definitely not the name of the program.

What would be the cause of this?

  • Here's the fix: You need to specify a description to 'signtool' so: signtool sign /f ... /p ... /d "Winning Lottery Number Generator" ./LotteryNumberGenerator.msi

  • I can't find the kb article on this, but it's because Windows creates a de-cabbed version of your MSI file that later gets stored in windows\installer.  It's no longer signed and shows up with that internal name. I think this is fixed in Windows 7, until then I don't know if there's a fix.
